Desde la publicación de la investigación de la Environment Protection Agency (EPA) norteamericana que demostraba el uso de software por parte de Volkswagen para falsear los resultados de los controles de contaminación en casi medio millón de vehículos, las acciones de la compañía han caído más de un 22% (una pérdida de valor de más de dieciséis mil millones de euros),su CEO ha pedido disculpas, está siendo investigada por el Departamento de Salud (por amenazas a la salud pública), por el Departamento de Comercio (por fraude en las prestaciones de los vehículos) y por el Departamento de Justicia (por comportamiento criminal), podría ser denunciada por sus inversores y por sus usuarios, los vehículos afectados están siendo retirados de los concesionarios en países como Canadá, y gobiernos de todo el mundo están llevando a cabo investigaciones similares, en países tan dispares como Corea del Sur , Australia y la propia Alemania, en donde el ministro de industria ha pedido a la compañía que aclare inmediatamente el tema y la ha acusado de perjudicar la reputación de toda la industria germana.

Es, históricamente, el problema más grave sufrido por una compañía en toda la historia de la automoción, y le ha explotado en la cara precisamente al fabricante de automóviles más grande del mundo, trono que recientemente había arrebatado a Toyota. No vale ningún argumento o paliativo: ni que la manipulación de tests sea habitual en prototipos de automóvil, ni que los requerimientos sean supuestamente demasiado exigentes, ni que se trate de un error, ni nada de nada. Hablamos de un problema que combina las amenazas a la salud pública (fabricar vehículos que exceden en más de cuarenta veces las emisiones permitidas por la ley) con el fraude a los usuarios (comercializar más prestaciones de las que los vehículos podían tener cumpliendo las normas), con la publicidad engañosa (utilizar el argumento del respeto al medio ambiente cuando se practica precisamente lo contrario), y con la más absoluta y evidente premeditación (crear un software específicamente para detectar los tests y falsearlos de manera alevosa). De todos los agravantes habituales, creo que únicamente falta la nocturnidad – y está por ver si alguno de los desarrolladores del software no trabajó por la noche. Sin duda, este escándalo se va a convertir en un auténtico caso de estudio en Responsabilidad Social Corporativa. O mejor dicho, en la total ausencia de la misma.

Crear un software para detectar cuando están sometiendo a un vehículo a una prueba de contaminación, ponerlo en un modo de bajas prestaciones solo durante ese momento, y volver a un modo que excede cuarenta veces el límite legal cuando la prueba termina. ¿Qué podía salir mal? No, que el software permita hacer algo no significa que sea una buena idea.
